Quick Tip: How to Easily Line a Round Cake Tin with Baking Paper
Have you ever struggled to fit a square or rectangular sheet of baking paper into a round cake tin?
I have a simple trick for you that only involves some basic folding and a pair of scissors. Just get out your craft skills from primary school, and you’ll end up with a perfectly round piece of baking paper to fit any size cake tin. Since you only use baking paper on the bottom, it will also make the edges of the cake look cleaner and smoother, preventing any creases along the sides that would normally show from the baking paper. Just remember to grease the sides of the tin as well. For example, I’ve used this method for my chocolate tiramisu cake, and it makes it so much easier!
I usually buy baking paper pre-cut into sheets that fit an oven tray or baking sheet. If you buy a roll that’s not pre-cut, simply cut a piece that’s a bit wider than the cake tin.
Here’s how to fold it (you can also see it in the pictures below):
- First, fold the sheet in half, so the shorter sides meet.
- Then fold it in half again from bottom to top to form a square.
- Take the bottom right corner as a base and fold it twice more until it forms a cone shape.
To get the perfect size, flip the cake tin upside down, place the tip of the cone at the center, and cut where the edge of the tin meets the cone.

Extra tip: Another quick trick for any shape of cake tin: crumble up the baking paper, run it under water to dampen it, and then unfold it. This softens the paper and makes it easier to mold to any shape without it bouncing back. I especially use this for rectangular tins like for my lemon drizzle cake.
